2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport V6 SEL with 4MOTION

Your VW key battery should last for several years, but most Starkville drivers will eventually end up having to change a battery in a VW key fob. Fortunately, VW key battery replacement is quite easy. In this guide below, Barnes Crossing Volkswagen shows you how to change a VW key fob battery so you can get back on the roads of Oxford in no time!

Finding the Right VW Key Battery

Learning how to change the battery in a VW key fob isn’t difficult. However, before you can get started, you need to know which is the right VW key battery for your fob:

  • Do you drive an older VW model? If your VW key fob looks like a simple Volkswagen car key, it will likely require a CR1632 battery.
  • If your Volkswagen was produced after 1999, it is likely that your VW key fob looks more like a small pod with buttons on one side. It should also have a retractable emergency key. If this is the case, a CR2032 battery should be the correct choice.

VW Key Replacement Battery

For those who drive a modern Volkswagen vehicle, you will need a small screwdriver to open the VW key fob and a new CR2032 battery. When performing a VW key battery replacement, you want to avoid scratching and damaging your fob. To prevent damage during this process, wrap the flat-head screwdriver with a small piece of tape.

  1. Hold the button on your Volkswagen key fob until the emergency key pops out.
  2. Grasp the VW key fob firmly.
  3. Find the seam where the lid and the base of your VW key fob connect. Use your fingers to create a small distance between the two halves. Pry the lid and base apart with the screwdriver, but perform this step cautiously to avoid scratching the inside of the fob.
  4. Remove the dead VW key fob battery and insert the new one. The positive side should be facing downward.
  5. Close the VW key fob case tightly to hold everything in place.
