Your Guide to the Volkswagen Jetta Warning Lights

2020 Volkswagen Jetta SEL Premium

If you see a warning light illuminate on your dashboard while you’re driving around Starkville, it usually means there’s something that needs your attention relatively quickly. But what do all the Volkswagen dashboard lights mean? There are several different lights that fall into a few categories, such as your brakes or your engine. The service team at Barnes Crossing Volkswagen has put together a guide outlining the symbols and meanings of the various dashboard lights that you’ll find on a Volkswagen Jetta, so you can stay informed on your rides.

VW Jetta Warning Lights and Their Meanings

The best way to stay on top of potential issues with your Volkswagen Jetta is to stick to your service center’s maintenance schedule and bring your car in for regularly-scheduled inspections. However, if you suddenly see a warning light illuminate on your dashboard, it’s important to know what each one means. Here is a quick guide to the various Volkswagen dash lights:

  • Brake problems
    • Anti-Lock Braking System Malfunction: The letters “ABS”.
    • Brake Light Bulb Failure: A circle with a small light in the middle and parentheses on either side.
    • Brake Pad Wear: A circle ringed by two sets of dashes in the shape of parentheses.
  • Engine or powertrain
    • Automatic Transmission Malfunction: A gear with an exclamation mark in the middle.
    • Coolant Level: A thermometer situated on a small wave, in red.
    • Diesel Engine Pre-Glow: If this light is on, there’s nothing to worry about. If it starts blinking, there may be an issue with your diesel engine.
  • AdBlue® System
    • AdBlue® Level Low: A half-empty canister pouring fluid.
    • AdBlue® System Malfunction: A wrench alongside the light described above.
    • AdBlue® No Restart: If the canister above suddenly turns red, it means that your vehicle will no longer turn on once you power it off. Bring it to the closest service center immediately if you see this.
  • Other issues
    • Battery/Alternator Error: A red light that looks like a battery. This indicates a problem with your electrical or charging systems.
    • Airbag Problem: A seated passenger with an airbag to their front.
