How Do You Change a Car Tire?

Mechanic with Tires
While it’s easy to schedule service at Barnes Crossing Volkswagen, some Oxford drivers like to take car care into their own hands. So, how do you change a car tire by yourself? Whether you’re dealing with a flat or simply swapping your summer tires for a winter set, learning how to change a car tire is a valuable skill. Let’s take a look at the step-by-step directions to change a car tire like a pro.

Steps to Change a Tire

Before you start the process, you’ll need to gather the right tools. Check your toolbox for the following: jack, lug wrench, spare tire or new tire(s), and your owner’s manual. Missing anything? Head over to our parts department in Tupelo or give us a call for advice! Once you have everything you need, follow these steps:

  • If you’re driving through Starkville, pull over to a safe spot and turn on your hazards.
  • Apply the parking brake and place wheel wedges under the other tires.
  • Pull the wheel cover or hubcap off and loosen the lug nuts.
  • Raise your vehicle using the jack and remove the lug nuts completely.
  • Remote the tire and mount the new or spare tire.
  • Tighten the lug nuts by hand initially, lower the vehicle to the ground, and re-tighten the lug nuts.

Spare Tire Safety

If you’re driving on a spare, how many miles can you drive before you notice a decline in quality? Your spare tire was designed to get you back on the road – and straight to the service department. Generally speaking, spare tires are built to last around 50 miles while driving at speeds of 50 mph or less.

How Often Should I Change my Tires?

The better your maintenance routine, the longer the lifespan of your tires. Sticking to regular tire rotations and alignment checks will ensure that your tires get the best performance possible. Still, all tires wear with time. It’s a good idea to check your tread level regularly to make sure that you can navigate the roads of West Point safely. And if you’re due for an upgrade, be sure to stop by our tire department
